Welcome to studying at Laurea Open University of Applied Sciences! This message contains important information related to starting your studies.
Follow the instructions below to start your studies successfully:
- Activate your Laurea user account.
- Log in to the learning platform.
- Familiarize yourself with Laurea systems used for your studies.
- Start your studies!
1. Activate your Laurea user account
Before starting your studies, you need to activate Laurea user account, which you’ll use to log in to the necessary systems during your studies.
If you already have Laurea user account, there’s no need to activate new ones. You can check your existing user account status on the IAM Portal.
Activation can be done either by using Finnish bank ID (method 1) or by using either Finnish Authenticator or eIDAS (method 2). If you are not able to use any of the electronic self-service authentication methods, you should contact Laurea’s Students Affairs office via email studentaffairs(a)laurea.fi for using a one-time password.
Method 1: Finnish bank ID
- Go to the IAM-portal
- Select “Suomi.fi – Student” authentication as your login method.
- Choose your bank and log in with your bank ID (follow the bank-specific instructions displayed on the screen).
- Read and accept the Terms of Service.
- Create a password for yourself by entering it in both fields.
- Finally, click OK.
Method 2: No Finnish bank ID
- Register to Finnish Authenticator. In case you already have eIDAS identificator provided by your home country (EU/European) you can use that.
- Log in to the IAM portal and select the “Suomi.fi – Student authentication and choose ”Identification methods for foreigners”.
- Choose either ”Finnish Authenticator” or your home country’s icon.
- After login select ”Continue to service” and you will be redirected back to Laureas IAM-site.
- Create a password for yourself and enter it in both fields.
- Finally, click OK
When you have activated your user account (method 1 or method 2), you can check your username on the “My Profile” page in the IAM Portal. Your username is in brackets after your name. Username is three (3) letters and five (5) numbers, for example abc12345. Make sure to note down your username and password.
For Laurea systems you log in using username@laurea.fi and the password that you created. Note! Username is different from Laurea’s student e-mail.
If you log in to cloud services with your Laurea user account, such as student email, you must authenticate yourself with multi-factor authentication.
If you have trouble activating your user account, contact Laurea ServiceDesk. You can call to number (09) 8868 7112 or send email to address servicedesk(a)laurea.fi.
2. Log in to the learning platform
Most of the Laurea Open UAS courses use the Canvas learning platform. If the course uses a different learning platform, such as DigiCampus or Viope, you will receive login instructions in a separate email.
Instructions for logging in to the Canvas learning platform:
- Go to the Canvas learning platform
- Select “Log in with Laurea ID”
- Enter your Laurea user account in the format username@laurea.fi and your
password.
The courses that you have enrolled for you can see on the Canvas main page and under “Courses”. You can learn how to use Canvas by watching the Canvas instructions video.
Note! Check the learning platform from the course’s information in the My Account section My studies.
3. Familiarise yourself with Laurea systems
In your Laurea Open UAS studies you will need Laurea systems. You can explore these systems in more detail on System instructions page. We recommend especially familiarizing yourself with Laurea’s student email and Pakki.
It is important to regularly check Laurea’s email, as course responsible teachers communicate with students through Laurea’s email. Your e-mail address is in the form of firstname.lastname@student.laurea.fi. You may check your e-mail address on the “My Profile” page in the IAM Portal. We recommend forwarding messages received in Laurea’s email to your own email address.

4. Start your studies
When you have activated your Laurea user account, logged in learning platfrom and familiarized yourself with Laurea’s systems, you can start your studies.
Familiarise yourself with the course schedules and any pre-assignments before course starting. You can find the courses you have enrolled for in the My Account section My studies.
If the course has any teaching sessions in campus or online, make sure to participate in the first session. More information on attendance requirements is in Attendance instructions.
